貝里尼的《卡普里特與蒙塔古家族》，與莎士比亞的《羅密歐與茱麗葉》同樣取材於1530年出版的意大利小說，但集中描述這對戀人生命中最後24小時的淒美故事。儘管在熟悉的情節中透露了中世紀意大利的政治暴力問題，但貝里尼以亮麗又感性的旋律掩蓋了故事的悲傷氛圍。

貝里尼著迷於譜寫女高音的聲樂，他選擇由女中音來反串劇中羅密歐一角，務求戀人合唱的二重唱更細膩抒情、倍感動人，對演唱家來說是極具挑戰性。對觀眾而言，無疑是享受美聲唱法中優美音色的最佳選擇之一。

此劇已不再像上世紀般鮮為人知，在世界各地多次上演，但是次製作將會是香港首演，為這齣經典之作重新注入新生命，讓觀眾耳目一新，令人期待！

Derived from the same 1530 Italian novella as Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Bellini’s opera I Capuleti e i Montecchi packs all the romantic tragedy into the lovers’ final 24 hours. Although the drama in the familiar story tracks the very real political violence that roiled medieval Italian cities, the undertone of melancholy is belied by the aching beauty of Bellini’s gloriously melodic music.

Bellini, a consummate composer for soprano, cast Romeo as mezzo-soprano; as a result, the demanding and challenging duets between the lovers are exquisitely lyrical and doubly touching; listeners are left in no doubt where the “bel” in “bel canto” comes from.

While I Capuleti e i Montecchi is thankfully no longer quite the relative rarity it was in the 20th century, Bellini’s masterpiece will be the Hong Kong premiere and an opportunity to see — and hear — new life breathed into this ancient and ever-popular story.
