About the programme
The pioneer of Chinese modern dance, Dr. Liu Feng-shueh founded her unique style on ethnic and cultural roots amid the flow of history. Following in Dr. Liu’s lineage, up-and-coming choreographer Lu Yi-chuan draws from the sense of drifting in migration culture to create this new production of the Neo-Classic Dance Company. “The Drifting Fate of Hakka” depicts the journey of the Hakka diaspora, as well as the coexistence of heaven, earth and man. It also incorporates both the traditional and the modern, revealing the infinite diversity of Hakka arts and culture. It is Dr. Liu’s wish for the Hakka dance style to be bestowed on the world stage. This excerpted presentation features Act I and Act III of the full work.
About the artist
Neo-Classic Dance Company
On March 20, 1976, Dr. Liu Feng-shueh and her dedicated students founded the Neo-Classic Dance Company in Taipei through embracing the everlasting spirit of “transforming the body into a pen of annals, and writing all sentiments and senses in the world of men.” Her intention was to shape historical sentience into a dance of the world, creating modernity while maintaining respect for tradition. By blending the core of Chinese humanism with Western art, the company presents a diverse body of modern dance through research, creativity and performance. Dr. Liu, chief choreographer of the Neo-Classic Dance Company for 60 years, officially passed the torch to her student Lu Yi-chuan in 2019, and has since devoted herself to writing and research.
