About The Floating Life
The Floating Life made its world premiere in 2006 at the TNUA School of Dance Summer Recital, before participating in the Hong Kong International Academy Dance Festival that same year.
At the time of working on the piece, the choreographer was going through a traumatic period in life – the distress of saying farewell to a dear soul and the cruel reality of dealing with his own cancer treatment. Having lived through the war-torn Cambodia and the tumultuous Cultural Revolution in China, and now in the face of the sad affairs of the 2006 global situation and his personal agonies, he found his inspiration in Dmitri Shostakovich and created this piece of work based on the Chamber Symphony after Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8. The Floating Life has since been staged multiple times. Through the medium of dance, it attempts to remind young people of danger and destruction war brings.
“I wanted to describe one’s inner being after experiencing the hefty impact of war and when one is numb to everything. After many gut-wrenching trials, tribulations, and disasters, what awaits you at the end of the path is no lush garden, nor any jubilation or fanfare.” (Shostakovich, 1946)
In Shostakovich’s purported memoir, Testimony, he was quoted as saying “The majority of my symphonies are tombstones…” These two statements no doubt are helpful in interpreting The Floating Life.
