Lewis Gibson《

Tai Kwun Theatre Season 2019

Four local and overseas productions with diverse perspectives and ways of presentation

Tai Kwun is situated in the restored Central Police Station compound, one of the most significant revitalization projects in Hong Kong, comprising three declared monuments—the former Central Police Station, Central Magistracy and Victoria Prison. Following its 1st anniversary celebration, its 2nd Theatre Season will be held in the coming July. The last Theatre Season was a huge success and the tickets were in great demand. Let's hear Eddy Zee, the Head of Performing Arts as he tells us about his work and the coming Theatre Season.

Eddy told The Art Venue that the performing arts team had two major achievements in the first year of the operation of Tai Kwun. They provided high quality programmes for free so that the general public could enjoy them without burdens. On the other hand, they have developed different thematic seasons for the performing arts sector. The two aspects of work keep going in parallel and have received very positive responses.

Every year, Tai Kwun organises Shifting by Knowledge Transfer series in April, Theatre Season in July, Dance Season in September and October, and Contemporary Circus Season in December and January, besides other regular programmes.

As for the upcoming Theatre Season, Eddy told us that there are four productions and they are Tri Ka Tsai(Hong Kong), Happily Ever After Nuclear Explosion (Hong Kong), The Day I Fell Into A Book (UK), andPlease, Continue (Hamlet)(Switzerland).

He furthered, “Tri Ka Tsai is co-created by the multi-talented artists Yuri Ng,Anna Lo and Rick Lau, it’s an originalHong Kong style cabaret performanceto examine this city’s bittersweetrelationship with Cantonese, English and Putonghua. Hong Kong style cabaret performance was once very popular. For example, Ocean Palace Restaurant was one of the biggest stages for cabaret performance and super stars like Anita Mui and Jacky Cheung also performed there. Tri Ka Tsai is a performance for us all Hong Kong people. Don’t miss! As forHappily Ever After Nuclear Explosion, it was commissioned and produced by the Munich Residenztheater and premiere in June 2018 with its German version. This will be the premiere of its Hong Kong version and the playwright and director Yan Pat To is working with the winner of Artist of the Year (Dance) of Hong Kong Arts Development Award 2018, Dick Wong to create this Hong Kong version. It’s a story of a manand a woman from the nuclear contaminated areas to examine how mankind moves forward after traumaticincidents.”

The other two programmes are overseas productions and they are The Day I Fell Into A Book (UK) by Lewis Gibson, and Please, Continue (Hamlet)(Switzerland) by Yan Duyvendak x Roger Bernat which will bring extraordinary theatrical experience to the audiences. Eddy explained withexcitement, “audiences of The Day I Fell Into A Book will enjoy an exciting experience of reading classic fairy-tales. Through specific technology, unseen imagination will become the reality in the theatre. The production was premiered in London in the January just past and received overwhelming responses. In Please, Continue (Hamlet), audiences areinvited to take part in a “trial” of Hamletfor the murder of Polonius. Real-life legal professionals will be in theperformance. The “cast” of each showwill be different and a group of 7-9audiences will form a “jury”, so thetheatrical experience will be unique. Over 150 performances have been toured in Europe, the production is verywell received.”
