The “Institute of Imagination” Call for Proposals: Creative Proposals x Tech Experiments, curated by Felixism Creation, began accepting applications in late September, and within a month, has received 28 transdisciplinary proposals from different fields, with no shortage of exciting concepts, such as VR, dance and video, or sound sculpturing. Some required the jury to search online in order to understand the context, which really broadened their horizons.

Theatre playwright and director Pat To Yan, one of the members of the jury, said, smiling, that reading proposals was very tiring, “because you really want to understand what's behind the proposal, what it's actually trying to get at.” Felixism Creation Director and member of the jury, Felix Chan, also smiled sheepishly, saying, “it’s not a comparison between apples and oranges, but between apples and a nice car, or a household appliance.” He expressed that, actually, Hong Kong has a lot of talent in this aspect, “but from another perspective, this proves that Hong Kong is lacking in opportunities, or else this would already have been done.” The Art Tech market in Hong Kong is hungrier than he expected, but right now the market is unable to accommodate this, and the distribution of resources is immature. “Institute of Imagination" perhaps could fill this void, and ‘draw the snake out from its hole’. More importantly, “Hong Kong needs a fair and altruistic plan.”

With regards to the jury’s criteria, Yan said you can’t stray too far from form and content; feasibility is also an important standard for the judging. There are eight members of the jury, each with their own expertise, and not belonging to the same field. “Everyone gives their opinion based on their insight from their own fields.” As such, the scoring greatly varies between jury members, with Yan laughing, “I always have a different opinion from the other jury members.” At the time of this interview the preliminaries had just ended; with 12 plans selected, they were preparing for one-on-one online interviews. The jury members will give questions to the applicant team based on elements such as the feasibility of the plan: “The interview is a variable, as the applicant team needs to show us something ‘eye-catching' about the plan.” Some “eliminated [plans] also come back to life”; “This morning, after some discussion, the jury decided to bring back three ‘forgotten gems’”.

After the online interviews, two plans will be selected, and the teams in question will move into Cattle Ranch Artist Village between December 22 and January 23 next year, as well as attending an online in-progress sharing. Then, they will hold an in-progress experimental showing between January 22-23 next year. Felix says, “That needs to be a complete audience-facing performance, and not the showing of a failed work.” If it’s innovative and feasible, it could receive an invitation to be developed into a complete performance. Perhaps. Good works deserve to be developed further.
