#WFH Watch from Home: Hiroaki Umeda “Median” (STAGE BEYOND BORDERS–Selection of Japanese Performances)

日本跨領域全才藝術家梅田宏明作品《Median》,這是在2018於法國演出的錄影。梅田宏明自2007年開始,已經於超過150個城市、40個國家巡演。

A dancer’s mesmerising movements seem to dance with the lights
The monochrome space blends beautifully into visualized sounds

The dancer, choreographer and multimedia artist UMEDA Hiroaki has performed in more than 150 cities in some 40 countries since 2007. Back then a collaboration with the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris on his solo work “Accumulated Layout” was so well received by international critics that invitations have followed ever since from France, Germany, Belgium, the UK, the USA, Australia, Taiwan and, of course, Japan.

As he is active in many fields, UMEDA takes charge of the video, sound and lighting design for his dance works, and also creates visual arts and installations to heighten audiences’ physical and visual senses.

In “Median,” sets of monochrome images and lights transfigure like cell division from moment to moment accompanied by intermittent electrical buzzing and pulses of white noise. Amid these effects UMEDA’s body appears dancing eloquently — sometimes powerfully and sometimes softly — even as it flashes into and out of view in flickers.
