表演場 x Marcus Fong / The Art Venue x Marcus Fong: 用音樂走向世界 A Hong Kong Composer’s Journey (Sept 2018)

Banner_marcus.png

This is the first journal of many to come, that is recording my life and work as a composer who travels and write music for movies and concerts all over the world.

For the past couple weeks, I have been doing the ground work for writing the music on the Albanian feature film called “Mali I Harrum”, which translates to “The Forgotten Mountain”. The movie revolves around a troubled retired veteran, Rikard and his daughterʼs family in the accursed and remote mountain in Albania.

Every film has itʼs unique voice and finding it is always the first priority. The process of finding it is collaborative, where very often involves conversation and exploration of different textures in music. Musical textures acts as a colour palette for emotions in a movie. A lot of emotions are added by placing music in a scene to enhance the impact of it. Think of it as the soup base of the noodle. It is almost never the main dish but an essential element to support it.

After several rounds of back and forth. We decided to go with an atmospheric, spacey and hypnotic approach to express the discord between the characters and build tensions, and we decided to do it with synthesizers and having the music to be rather minimal.

Other than being minimal. We also agreed on not employing a melody. Because of the lack thereof a melody, it allows the audience to immerse themselves and reflect on the story by themselves instead of leading them and subconsciously leading the story with musical gestures. This has been a trend in international cinema especially in the drama genre of films.

For the next month and a half, i will be working to complete the music and follow through with the mix of all the sound. “Mali I Harrum” will be released in theatre at the start of 2019 in Europe and will be on streaming platforms several months after.

I will be travelling to Vancouver in 2 weeks for another musical adventure, which i will document on my journal next month. Thatʼs it for now. Marcus out.
