In 2016, the West Kowloon Xiqu Centre signed a Letter of Intent with the Shanghai Center of Chinese Operas. The Experimental Chinese Opera Series held in 2017 marks the second of their exchange performance showcases.

The Xiqu Centre will organise the 2nd edition of the Experimental Chinese Opera Series from 27 September to 19 October 2019 and it will become an annual event from this year onwards. This year, three innovation newproductions will be staged, including 10 shows of the experimental Cantonese opera "Farewell My Concubine" (New Adaptation). The production is produced by the Xiqu Centre, with Naomi Chung, Head of Xiqu, Performing Arts of the West Kowloon as producer, and young Cantonese opera artists Keith Lai and Janet Wong as playwright, directors, music arranger and main cast, to pay tribute to the tradition while merging innovative new techniques. After its premiere in Shanghai Experimental Theatre Festival in 2016, the production came to Hong Kong in 2017 as the Experimental Chinese Opera Series. It has also toured Beijing, Quanzhou, Singapore and will be staged at the Taiwan Traditional Theatre Festival on 1 and 2 June 2019.

It won the ‘Best Experimental Xiqu Performance of 2017’ award at the first Beijing Performing Arts Expo in September 2018. Naomi said, “The production was showcased in theExperimental Chinese Opera Series in 2017 with three shows and received overwhelming responses. The demand of tickets was high, and all tickets were sold out. Hence, we will be staging ten shows of the production to meet the demand of local audiences.”

It has never been easy to create innovative new Cantonese Operaproduction in Hong Kong. Keith Lai and Janet Wong told us the reasons why they are committed to produce innovative productions. Janet expressed, “I was encouraged by the West Kowloon’s sincerity to create this production. Cantonese opera is facing an uncertaintime, and everyone has their own opinions concerning its futuredevelopment. Having said that, it’s a good time to explore and the West Kowloon assembled a group selflessly contributing their expertise to explore the past and the future of Cantonese Operatogether. It’s a hard but interesting journey.” Keith explained, “I'm fond ofCantonese Opera. It is more aboutinheriting the past and exploring thefuture, rather than being innovative. Inorder to keep Cantonese Opera vibrant,we have to continue the best practicesand to take it forward.”
